    The rules

    How the signal works

A guess tells you how many letters are exact, nearby, or missing. It does not tell you which ones.

    2

    Exact

The right letter is already in the right position.

    1

    Nearby

The letter belongs in the word, but it sits somewhere else.

    2

    Missing

The remaining letters are not part of the hidden word.

    The positions stay hidden

Most word guessing games color each letter after a turn. Scout the Word gives you totals instead. If a guess earns two exact letters, you still have to decide which two are locked in place.

When the trail goes cold, reveal one letter in its exact position. That help comes at a price: it uses one of your steps.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Scout the Word the same as Wordle?

No. Wordle marks every tile after a guess. Scout the Word gives you three totals instead: exact letters, nearby letters, and missing letters. You have to work out which letters earned each part of the signal.

Can I use a name as the secret word?

Yes. A custom answer can be any 4 to 7 letter name or word. The person playing can always enter the secret answer, while their other guesses must appear in the game dictionary.

How does the game count repeated letters?

Exact positions count first. The game then checks the letters that remain and counts each copy only once. A guess with two Es will not get credit for both when the secret word has only one E.

Does revealing a letter use a turn?

It uses one step and shows the letter in its exact position. The game protects your final step, so you cannot spend it on a reveal when you still need to guess the word.
