Anagram generator
Turn a word, name or phrase into a brand new one using every letter. Rearrange it into up to three words, keep a word you want with must include, and switch between common and full dictionaries.
What is an anagram generator?
An anagram generator rearranges all the letters of a word, name or phrase into a brand new word or phrase, using every letter exactly once. Give it DORMITORY and it can spell DIRTY ROOM; feed it CLINT EASTWOOD and out comes OLD WEST ACTION. It is the reverse of staring at a jumble and hoping something clicks: the tool does the shuffling and hands you the ones that are real words.
People use anagram generators to make pen names and pseudonyms, to hide messages, to name bands and characters, and mostly just for the fun of seeing what their own name turns into. Type something in above, choose how many words you will allow, and it does the rest.
Famous anagram examples
The best anagrams feel almost intentional. Here are a few classics where the letters rearrange into something fitting:
How to use the anagram generator
Type a word, name or phrase into the box and the generator rearranges every letter into new words and phrases as you go. Three controls shape the results:
- Up to 1, 2 or 3 words, single-word anagrams are tidiest, while two and three words open up names and longer phrases.
- Minimum word length trims the noise by dropping very short fillers.
- Must include a word forces a word you want into every result, so the rest rearranges around it.
Leave the list on Common words for readable anagrams, or switch to All words to search the full Collins dictionary when you want every last possibility. Tap the copy icon on any result to grab it.
Anagram generator vs anagram solver
The two sound alike but do different jobs. An anagram solver (or word unscrambler) takes a set of loose letters, like the tiles on your Scrabble rack, and finds every word you can make, usually using some of them. This generator uses all your letters to build a new word or phrase. Reach for the solver when you are mid-game and need a play; reach for the generator when you want to rework a whole word, name or phrase into something new.
Frequently asked questions
What is an anagram generator?
A tool that rearranges all the letters of a word, name or phrase into a brand new word or phrase, using every letter exactly once. Feed it DORMITORY and it can hand back "dirty room".
How is it different from an anagram solver?
A solver takes loose letters (like a Scrabble rack) and finds the words you can spell, usually with some of them. A generator uses every letter to build a whole new word or phrase. Need to find plays from a rack instead? Use the anagram solver.
Can it make an anagram of my name?
Yes, type your full name and let it run. Names often work best with two or three words, and the "must include a word" box lets you keep part of the name intact while the rest rearranges around it.
Why do some anagrams look strange?
The generator only knows real dictionary words, and the full list includes plenty of obscure ones. Keep the word list on "Common words" for readable results, raise the minimum word length, or require a word you want in there.
Does an anagram have to use every letter?
Yes, that is what makes it a true anagram, and it is the difference from the solver. Every letter of your word, name or phrase is used exactly once in each result.
